Design Advice #1: Neutral Tree Themed Nursery

Megan Schwartz, resident blogger at Hybrid Mom,  is getting ready for baby #3 and accepted my offer to help her design her nursery. With 2 young girls, ages 2 and 4, and a baby on the way, we are tying to keep the budget as low as possible. But Megan and her new baby need a peaceful sanctuary where they can bond and I am going to help them put it together for under $1,000!

1- The entire nursery theme was based on this lovely crib set that Megan fell in love with. It’s the Little Tree 4 Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set by Migi, available from Amazon.com for $159.99 + free shipping. Matching Migi Little Tree Mobile and MiGi Little Tree Valance also available.

2- This set is an incredible deal! You can get the Nursery 101 by La Jobi 3 Piece Nursery Set, which includes Deluxe Convertible Crib, Changing Table and Dresser in Classic White, for $379.00.

3- Kiwi Squeeze from Behr Paint. This calming color will work beautifully with the crib bedding.

4- Vinyl wall decals are an excellent option for creating an inexpensive mural in you nursery. I recommended this Childrens Tree with Flower Blossoms and Owl Vinyl Wall Decal from a seller on Etsy for $70.00.

5- The Boliden Chair & Foot Stool from IKEA is a stylish alternative to a traditional rocking chair and gives this nursery a contemporary touch. Available for $99.00

6- When you find yourself sitting in your rocker with a sleeping baby in your arms and no place to put the empty bottle or book you have in your hand, you will come to realize what I discovered when I found myself in that exact position: A side table is so convenient. The Frosta Stool from IKEA is only $12.99 and makes the perfect side table for the Boliden Chair & Foor Stool.

7- A small lamp comes in handy when you need to change diapers in the middle of the night but don’t want to upset your baby with a bright light. I recommended the ALÄNG Table lamp from IKEA, available for $29.99. It’s chic, cheap and functional (I have the AL ÄNG Floor Lamp in my living room).

The grand total of this Chic & Cheap Nursery (excluding cost of paint and painting materials) is $750.97!

I can’t wait to see what this nursery will look like once it comes together.

What are your thoughts on our Chic & Cheap design?

  1. Great design! It will be so peaceful and yet cheery. Sometimes tranquil can be dull, but this has just enough color and punch to keep in interesting. Great work! Can’t wait to see the finished product!

What rug is that? It’s cute and I am using this bedding. I am looking for a more neutral paint color, too…not a green or yellow but something in a beige/tan

Hi Kate. Thanks for stopping by!
Actually, that’s not a rug. It’s a foam play mat from Skip Hop. I have it in pink and brown. It’s non-toxic and especially made for infants and toddlers.

Behr is my paint of choice.

Here are a few options for a tan/beige paint color:
    Seaside Sand (740C-1)
    Cozy Cottage (740C-2)
    Hazelnut Cream (750C-2)
    Chocolate Froth (720C-2)

But please don’t rule out a bright yet soothing shade of blue! Even of your baby’s a girl, painting at least one wall in the room would bring it to life. You can always add the girlyness (and by that I mean, pink) with a few accent items!

Consider using a combo of Behr’s Seaside Sand (740C-1) with a wall in Behr’s Ionic Sky (510C-1)

    Hi there!

I’m curious if the Boliden Chair & Foot Stool from IKEA is comfortable. Also, does it rock or have any motion at all? It’s such a great looking chair, and I too don’t love the look of most of the gliders/rockers out there.

    Thanks!!

@Jenny, I’ve sat in it in the Ikea showroom and it is comfortable. I don’t know how it would be sitting in it for extended periods of time.

Last month I featured a nursery that also had this chair & foot stool from Ikea {Sophia’s Shabby Beach Chic Nursery box} and this mom loves it!

  4. I am planning to get a new rocker to refurbish my big patio. Which form of rocking chair is without a doubt ideal for the purpose of the entire exterior place and so superb if i do definitely not plan to transfer the rocking chair indoor inside of cold months?
