Rich Chocolate & Pink Nursery

Lilly Grace will be coming home to an upscale nursery that exudes elegance and sophistication. But this nursery is all about repurposing and reusing items to create unique touches for this very special room.

Description: Pink, Brown and White Nursery

Child’s Name: Lilly Grace

Child’s Age: Still cooking!

Location: Waxahachie, TX

What was your inspiration for the room?

Hmmm….the colors were already on the wall from my older daughter.  I really wanted to reuse as much as possible considering our budget and the fact that I’ve been sick for most of the pregnancy.  I originally got the idea to do dark brown walls from a nursery I saw online.  It was an older girl’s room with dark brown walls and pink.  I fell in love with it.  I love the boldness of the brown and how calming it is during the day.

Describe your decorating style.

Hard question to answer.  If I had all the money in the world it might be different.  I tend to use things that I already have (I am constantly painting things new colors).  It makes me happy when I can give something I already have a new life and not have to buy something!  I guess you could say….classic with a modern twist?  Who knows!

Details about the room.

Furniture: All the furniture in the room is from IKEA except for the crib. I chose white mainly because if I did chose to mix and match from different stores it would be WAY easier to do it with white than a wood finish. The changing table isn’t actually a changing table – it has a smaller than normal pad on the top so it won’t last forever.  I had my husband add an additional shelf to the inside of the table to hold the wipes and other necessities.  It was one of those pre-cut white laminate pieces of wood from Home Depot for about $8.  I love how it looks like it was supposed to be that way – another great reason to use white when you’re on a budget!

Curtains, Memo Board, Pillow, Basket Liners and Shelf Decorations: I bought fabric and made the curtain, memo board, pillow and decoration for the shelf.  I bought coordinating fabric and had the basket liners made for me.  I painted the giraffes (bought in S. Africa) white, used an old pair of shoes from when I was a baby and hung one of my old outfits as a baby as well.

Butterflies on the Wall: I found a template of the butterflies online and printed them out on card stock (re-sized them on the computer first).  I cut them out and glittered a few of them (you can’t really see that in the pictures) with white glitter.  They’re attached to the wall with poster putty (is that was it’s called?).  Totally cheap and super cute!

Bedding: Nurseryworks – Sea Holly Rose Crib Bedding from Overstock.com (note: manufacturer is no longer making this product). I had already made the curtain and memo board and really didn’t want to redo them so it was a challenge to find something that would “go” with the existing pattern and colors. This bedding set has plenty of white and the colors are compliment the colors I had already used in the room. I’m thrilled with how it all looks together.

Lamps: Also a redo. Originally pink and green from my first daughter’s nursery, I covered up the green with a pink feather boa.

Frame above the crib: Fanaholm frame from Ikea. I bought a white matte to go in it and printed out the “L” with my computer at home.  It seemed silly to leave the frame empty until I had a picture of the little one to put in it - so I thought I’d go with the monogram.  I like it so much I think it may stay even after she gets here!

Favorite Items

I love the small canvas covered in the pink damask on the shelf above her bed.  I wanted to find some kind of artwork that was different but never came across anything in the stores.  I ended up using a piece of scrap fabric to cover an old painting.  I found a cheap baby rattle, painted it white and hot glued it to the canvas.  I love how it turned out and that it matches perfectly!

Advice

I think reusing things that aren’t typical “decorations” helps to make a room special and unique. My favorite part of decorating is making something attractive that didn’t cost a lot of money.  It’s more fun that way!
