LULU DK | Child Fabric Collection from Schumacher {New & Noteworthy}

I was invited to participate as part of the Bloggers Lounge at the DDB Spring Market yesterday (highlights coming soon!) and I was able to take part in many of the design chats and panel discussions that took place in several of the showrooms—including the panel discussion, Designing for a Sophisticated Child at the Schumacher showroom.

Designer Lulu DK and Susan North, Schumacher‘s Senior Vice President of Design and Creative Director, where on hand to talk about designing sophisticated products to create living environments for today’s children, from infants to teens, and to introduce Schumacher‘s new line of fabric for children designed by Lulu DK.

Lulu deKwiatkowski is a talented artist, mother of three boys and founder of Lulu DK Fabrics. Her signature style is bold and whimsical with a generous use of color. Lulu’s recognizable patterns have been featured on the sets of Sex in the City and Friends, and notable clients include Drew Berrymore, Steven Spielberg, Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Courtney Cox.

We got a close look at Lulu’s new fabric line, LULU DK | Child, a collaboration with Schumacher and also got a chance to hear how the collection was developed. Lulu created all of the patterns for the collection by hand, on painter’s canvas. “Simple is best. I’m a traditionalist when it comes to children. I don’t believe in dark and dense for children,” explains Lulu regarding the white backgrounds for the Schumacher children’s line. “The designs are ageless and nothing really screams baby.”

The new line is perfect for upholstery, window treatments,throw pillows and accessories. We couldn’t help but notice that the patterns would also make beautiful wall coverings—and Suycel dePedro of Tilton Fenwick had the same idea! She asked Susan and Lulu DK about the possibility of a wallpaper line, and while there are no plans yet Susan did mention that they had already been asked about it many times, so there might be a possibility of a collection in the future.

I’ve embedded the brochure for the Schumacher LULU DK | Child collection. Take a peek and let me know what you think!

  1. I LOVE this fabric and would love to purchase some for curtains in my little girls’ nursery but I have looked and can’t find a price on the fabric per yard. It also looks like it is really difficult to purchase because you can’t just buy it online – you have to go through a designer?? I wish this was easier to purchase. :( Do you have any other nice, affordable fabric ideas?? Please help! Thanks!

  2. Bridget says:

    I thought the same thing! Love, love, love this fabric for my twins’ nursery, but I have too much else going on to go through a designer just to buy the fabric. What a shame. :(
