Real Room: Modern, Kid-Friendly Toddler Room

The transition from nursery to toddler room happens very quickly. One day you have a little baby and — bam! — that baby starts crawling, walking, climbing and the needs for your kiddo’s space change in an instant.

This transitional toddler room comes to us from Janey, the talented designer behind Piecemaker Studio. Her unique designs —seen above— were the inspiration for the space that her toddler boy calls his own.

Child’s Name: Marcus
Child’s Age: Almost Three
Location: Toronto, Canada

What was your inspiration for the room? The DwellStudio Transportation bedding started it all. I decided to colour a few areas of the room based on the gray and blue colours of the bumper.
Describe your decorating style: Clean, Modern and Functional.

Any advice for other moms transitioning their nursery into a toddler room?
The toddler stage is a whole different ball game. Keep only age appropriate toys in the room to avoid clutter. Sometimes they show no interest or forget about a toy, but the trick I use with Marcus is that I rotate the toys around the shelves every so often. It works!

Favorite items in the room?
1. Chair Cushions — Made from the crib bumper. I had just enough length left to stretch around the sides and back of the bed. I like to keep it as a decorative element, and to tie the room together.
2. Debbie Travis Ledges — I previously used these during the nursery stage as shelves for the animal pillows. I have since rearranged them as the platform for the wooden whale bank.
3. Custom Canvas Art — I make them, and can personalize each one to suit your room by colour and design. Although they come with mounting brackets and screws, they are so lightweight, that you can use those amazing 3M Command velcro strips.

  1. I like everything except I dont like how bedding looks frumpy and untailored. Also chair cushions you used is a great idea exacuted poorly. You can actually use those cushions to fully upholstered the chair instead of tying it. Check out ikea hack ideas for that table.
