Mr. Mustachio: Little Man Nursery

Kiddie birthday parties are a great source of inspiration when it comes to nursery design. But how do you translate a party theme to decor? That’s the question that our lovely reader Sarah Q. had for me.

Sarah writes “I love those ‘Little Man’ mustache parties (also known as barbershop-themed parties) that are all over Pinterest—but how would I translate that into a nursery theme? No idea where to start really…. Help!

Not to worry, Sarah. Help is here!

Featured Nursery: Serene, Modern and Gray

Expectant mom Tracy and her husband are expecting their first child and wanted to create a serene, modern room that wasn’t too childish; one that could grow with their little one. The inspiration for this gray nursery came from the birch tree decals — and they chose a light bluish-gray paint for the walls to complement the white decals. The unique art work and heirloom toys and furniture add a layer of heritage to this new baby’s space.

Child’s Name: Grayson
Child’s Age: Due on St. Patrick’s Day
Location: Chapel Hill, NC

What was your inspiration for the room?
Birch tree decals.

Describe your decorating style.
Modern, clean with a touch of coziness and nostalgia.

Favorite items in the room.
My favorite part has to be the baby animal photos purchased on sale at; they are just adorable! I also love the Oeuf Sparrow crib and the Klaussner rocker & ottoman.

Tell us about your DIY projects and repurposed items.
The dresser is an old This End Up dresser that was in my childhood bedroom which we updated by painting it gray and replacing the knobs. The wooden toys also have some history to them — they were my brother’s toys growing up.

Any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our readers that you may have learned while putting together your nursery?
I was told by many mom friends to spend money on a nice rocker and crib so the majority of my budget went towards those items. I saved money by reusing old furniture (the dresser and side table) and furnishings (the drapes and lamps), as well as budget friendly solutions from IKEA, and I think you also get the most bang for your buck on wall treatments like the decals since they provide such a large focal point. I also made sure to shop around and wait for sales on items that I coveted. For example, often runs coupons on top of sale prices; BuyBuyBaby does as well. The animalprintshop ran a special when you bought four prints you got one free.  This room was a work in progress for quite a while waiting for the best prices.

Mustache Party: A Little Man First Birthday Bash

Mustaches are all the rage when it comes to anything baby boy related. Mom Katie decided to go with a mustache theme for her son’s first birthday not because she wanted to go with the trend, but because she thought he would look really cute in a mustache! She made all of the decorative elements herself and threw her big boy a very fun, and personal, first birthday celebration.

The party was held at home and plenty of family and friends were invited — a cozy affair to celebrate baby’s first year of life. Baby Jude was dressed to coordinate with the party theme in a darling mustache tee and faux mustache. What a gentleman!

Katie made a personalized birthday banner and colorful paper party hats to decorate her home for the occasion. The “Happy Birthday” party banner was made using wood letters purchased from a local craft store and scrapbooking paper, while the baby’s name was spelled out with jumbo cardboard letters wrapped with yarn.

As you scroll down, look carefully and you’ll spy some pictures of baby’s of year strung along the windows, using red and white bakers twine and clothes pins to clip the pictures.

Happy 1st Birthday, Jude!

Featured Toddler Room: Nautical and Bright Big Boy Room

We featured Jude’s modern, woodland-themed nursery way back in 2010. It was one of the first nurseries we featured. Now, Jude is a growing toddler and soon-to-be big brother, which meant that it was time to give him a big boy room. Katie, Jude’s mom, designed a room that’s traditional yet modern, with a bit of whimsy, that will accommodate him perfectly as he continues to grow.

Child’s Name: Jude
Child’s Age:
Fishers, IN

What was your inspiration for the room?
I fell in love with the speedboat bed from Pottery Barn Kids, and everything kind of went from there. I probably would have done a nautical theme even without the bed. I LOVE stripes and primary colors!

Describe your decorating style.
I tried not to get too stuck in my theme. I definitely pulled from the nautical idea, but I didn’t want it to overwhelm the space. I like to keep things fairly simple, colorful and a tad eclectic without (hopefully) leaving the space too chaotic when I’m finished. I was dying to refinish a dresser in a bold yellow or red color, but my husband wouldn’t go for it.

Favorite Items: Definitely the boat bed and alphabet wall.

How did you make that stunning alphabet wall?
The alphabet was made by nailing THREE packages of nails into the wall and winding embroidery floss around them to create the letters.Make sure you have a well thought out plan of action before you put a zillion holes in your wall! It will be worth it if you do!

Breezy Chic Cowboy Nursery

A cowboy theme is something you don’t see too often when it comes to nursery design — but that’s probably because when we think cowboy, a nursery like this one is not what comes to mind. The room is light and fresh, thanks to the soft blue walls and the flowing white drapes. Cowboy hats and a cowboy vest were used as art in this Texan nursery — and there’s even a guitar signed by Willie Nelson! You cannot miss this unique, gender-neutral space.

Visit Apartment Therapy Family for all the lovely details regarding this real cowboy nursery.
