The San Francisco Decorator Showcase took place during the month of May in a 1930′s French Normandy-style mansion. Several design firms were given a room in the house to decorate. Chiya Ewald, of the interior design firm Marsh & Clark, was assigned the third floor attic to transform into a triplet nursery.

Chiya Ewald, designer, says “We wanted to go beyond the deluge of duckies and primary colors to create a beautiful and innovative room that that appeals to modern parents’ aesthetics and sensibilities.” And that they did with this sustainable and multifunctional, sophisticated baby room.

The cribs were handcrafted by Rob Taboada, a local craftsman. These cribs were made with sustainable and toxin-free materials like Machiche {sustainably-harvested hardwood}.

The carpets underneath the cribs are made of 100% un-dyed wool.

And those beautiful chandeliers? Custom-made and make perfect mobiles.

Changing tables double as mirrors to reflect light and space in the room. And the accent wall painted with square patterns breaks up the solid powder-blue of the other walls.

Sivan and her husband did an amazing job putting together a feminine and sophisticated nursery for their twin girls, Meital and Orly, to grow in. From the diy projects done with love by mom to all of the budget friendly finds that make this room unique, Sivan shares with us all the details.

What was your inspiration for the room?

Rather than select a major theme around which to decorate the room, my husband and I focused on creating an environment or a feeling.  That is, we wanted a serene, delicate, feminine space for our twin girls that wasn’t overly pink or stereotypically girly.  It was also important to us that the room be able to grow with the girls so I aimed to create a more sophisticated space.  Light blue and baby pink have always been favorite colors, and I love animals so, with the above attributes in mind, I decided to create a blue room with pale pink touches and animal accents.

Describe your decorating style

I love clean, contemporary, unique designs that aren’t too matchy-matchy.  Also, I’m a big fan of rooms that have unique, personal pieces and homemade touches.

Details about the room.

Paint: Behr Sonata.

Cribs: Baby Mod Cadence 4-in-1 Crib from Wal-Mart (these look great, were extremely affordable, and can grow with the girls).

Glider and Ottoman: Crypton glider from Costco (this was a big splurge, but I’ve read great reviews about the strength of Crypton fabric against stains and liked that the glider wasn’t too “baby-ish” and would be able to work in other rooms if we decided to move it in the future).

Dresser, Night Stand, Storage Bench: Ikea Hemnes series.

Bookshelf: Ikea Expedit shelving unit.

Curtains: Ikea Alvine Rund curtains.

Names above cribs: Etsy seller SheaChicDesigns.

Favorite Items

My favorite item in the room has to be the girls’ names above the crib.  From the start, I knew that I wanted their names prominently displayed above the cribs and this was the finishing touch on the room (hung just days before the girls arrived!).  I ordered the letters and was ecstatic over how they turned out.  I think that they look much more amazing in person.

Advice

Check out one of the many decorating blogs and websites available (like this one!) to get an idea of what you like prior to actually starting the design process.  I pored over hundreds of “real” nursery room photos before selecting a theme or style for the room, and I definitely think it paid off in terms of helping me create a cohesive space that I’m very much in love with.

It’s the funnest nursery for a boy I have seen in a while. It gives a clean and contemporary edge to the classic safari nursery theme and I LIKE IT.

The crib pictured above is the Oeuf Crib in Walnut Stain and costs around $920! But you can get the Modern BabyLetto Modo 3-in-1 Two-Tone Baby Crib by DaVinci for $379.00.

The beautiful modern storage unit to the right is also from Oeuf. It’s called Mini Library and it retails for $650. I have looked EVERYWHERE for an affordable piece that resembled this storage unit. No luck. However, you could choose to purchase the Torsby Sideboard from Ikea for $299. You might even want to consider removing one of the sliding doors in order to get a look that is closer to Oeuf’s Mini Library.

The Shaggy Raggy Lime Rug featured in the picture is 2’8″x 4’8″ and costs approximately $137. Consider getting a smaller sized rug or even a bath rug. No, I’m not crazy. I’m actually a genius! I have a bath mat as the entrance rug to my daughter’s bedroom. It was much cheap than any rug I could have purchased and it was exactly what I was looking for. As an alternative to the Shaggy Raggy Lime Rug, get the All That Jazz Bath Rug in Lime (21″ x 34″) that costs just $24.99.

The Modern Safari Baby Bedding set for $658 is the bedding featured in the image above. I think that is just insane! I found almost an identical crib set at almost half the cost. It’s the Modern Zoo Crib Bedding by Carousel Designs and you can purchase a 4-piece set for $316.

The total cost of decorating your nursery with all of the items from the image on the top would be $3,260. But with a little creativity and a little internet research, we have just duplicated the look of this contemporary safari themed nursery for $1,457.97!

If you choose a traditional style, you will more than likely want a sleigh crib. Sleigh cribs are très chic and their traditional style of elegantly sloped headboards and footboards is what make this crib style a popular choice. Thankfully, there are multiple slope styles and designs for you to choose from, allowing you to incorporate some of your own personal tastes when it comes to making your choice.

Bratt Decor Chelsea Sleigh Crib

This Bratt Decor Chelsea Sleigh Crib is a modern take on the traditional sleigh crib with a fixed gate. It features beautiful relief carvings on the sides (not seen here) and at the foot of the crib. The Chelsea Sleigh Crib is crafted from solid hardwood and hand distressed. But this gorgeous crib can set you back about $1450. Yikes!

Pottery Barn's Larkin Fixed Gate Sleigh Crib

Pottery Barn Kids offers the Larkin Fixed Sleigh Crib. Although this option forgoes the relief carvings on the sides, it is also made from hardwood and features hand carved details (channeled panels). The Larkin Fixed Sleigh Crib is available at Pottery Barn Kids for $1,099. Still pricey but a more affordable choice than the Bratt Decor Chelsea Sleigh Crib.

Young America by Stanley Stationary Sleigh Crib

For a more affordable choice, you might want to consider the Young America Stationary Sleigh Crib – Merlot. This crib does doesn’t have the carving details but it does feature trim on the sides and it’s available in 9 different finishes. Another plus? The side gates pop out and this crib turns into a day bed. I found this crib online for around $779. Almost half the price of the Bratt Decor Chelsea Sleigh Crib!

BSF Baby 4-in-1 Madison Sleigh Crib

This option, by far, is the most affordable. The BSF Baby 4-in-1 Madison Sleigh Crib costs just $239.99! And it is a great option for those of you working with limited space. The headboard and footboard feature elegant slopes and this crib converts into a transitional bed without having to purchase a conversion kit.

So whether your budget is big or small, your little prince or prince will be sleeping like royalty, because a traditional sleigh crib is within your reach.
