New mom Megan blogs about family life on her blog, Me and Wee, but before she had her baby girl she ran her own graphic design studio. While expecting, she channeled her creative nature into creating a cheerful and modern nursery for her daughter Paige.

Child’s Name: Paige Rosalie

Child’s Age: almost 16 months

Location: Westford, Massachusetts

What was your inspritation for the room?

Someone gave me a wonderful gift from Mamma Mio while I was pregnant and I loved the Robin’s Egg blue color of the packaging. I found a paint color to match for the walls and the rest came together from there! When I found out we were having a girl, I decided that yellow would be a fun accent color. I wanted the room to feel cheerful, happy and fun because that’s the life I want for my daughter.

Describe your decorating style.

My decorating style is colorful, whimsical, and airy. I like mixing old and new things with handmade touches. I always like a room to have an element of surprise that adds a unique touch.

Give us all the details about your room! Don’t forget to share with us any money saving tips you might have learned along the way.

Paint: Robin’s Nest (#618) from Benjamin Moore.

Bedding: “Macaroni” from Nursery Works. It has been discontinued but there are lots of other great choices where I bought it at www.modernnursery.com.

Shelving: Expedit bookcase from Ikea.

Dresser: Malm dresser from Ikea. To give the dresser more kick, I covered a few of the fronts with a natural shade of seagrass wallpaper. It adds texture and interest without making it stand out too much. It also makes the dresser look more upscale (in my opinion).

Fabric for hoops: From Purl Soho.

Art above the crib: The right image is a from a book cover (about children’s book illustration). The left image of the elephant is my own drawing/design. The

Curtains: Valances were from Walmart. There are blackout shades in the windows, hidden by the curtains. We added Martha Stewart decorative ribbon to the bottoms of the shades to add interest to the otherwise boring plain white surface. The ribbon comes with adhesive already applied, so it was an easy project. The shades are used every nap and every night!

Favorite items.

My favorite “item” in the room is my daughter! But I guess she isn’t really an item per se. My favorite objects in the room are the hooray banner (it really conveys the excitement Little P brings to our life), the yellow dachshund lamp (we have a mini dachshund as a pet who we love), and the fabric hoops.

Advice.

Start with a fun wall color and consider the design style you like. Spend some time researching furniture and accessories that compliment it. I had an idea folder on my computer where I saved images of things I liked. Once I isolated the trends of what I liked most the room came together easily. It’s important to take your time and flush out your ideas rather than rush. A small scale diagram also helped because I was able to make sure that all of the furniture pieces would fit how I wanted. I also made a little idea board with all my favorite things and colors (on the computer) to make sure it all worked together.

When you can't find the perfect anything for your room, take a cue from this mom-to-be and have it custom made! Found out how to design a custom nursery without spending a fortune.

Trisha was an expectant mom in Colorado that was having trouble finding items for her nursery that caught her eye. But Trisha didn’t get discouraged. She took this as a challenge and designed a custom nursery for her son Sawyer without spending a fortune.

Child’s Name: Sawyer

Child’s Age: 10 months

Location: Colorado

What was your inspiration for the room?

I wanted to do something different and I didn’t love any of the traditional boy bedding out there. I tend to like more simple and clean styles. I planned to find fabric I liked and design the room around that. I think the colors of the nursery are unique and not something you see everyday and will transition well into toddlerhood. I love the color of the walls. To me it’s the perfect blend of happy yet soothing.

Describe your decorating style.
I have an appreciation for all decor styles but my home is mostly traditional. Sawyer’s room is definitely more modern than the rest of my home so I was happy the way it turned out (being slightly out of my zone).

Give us all the details about your room! Don’t forget to share with us any money saving tips you might have learned along the way.

Paint: Spring Sky from Benjamin Moore.

Bedding: Made by a custom crib bedding seamstress on Etsy, Fingers & Toes. I just love the giraffe fabric on the inside of the bumper! She did such a great job. I also had her make extra crib sheets.

Furniture: the crib, dresser, and bookcase were all from Land of Nod. I love the clean lines and the quality is superb.

Crib: White Anderson Baby Crib from Land of Nod

Dresser: White Simple 2-Over-2 Dresser from Land of Nod

Bookcase: White Flat Top Bookcase from Land of Nod

Rocker & Ottoman: From JC Penney. I love this rocker, Sawyer and I spend so much time here. The price was great compared to similar rockers out there and the white piping was a unique touch. {We didn’t find it on the JC Penney site but found a similar one here}

Valances: These were handmade by my sister and I. I wanted something simple that also coordinated. These were super easy to make and were made for a total of $20.

Orange Blanket and Pillow: The orange throw was purchased from Pottery Barn {on sale} and I handmade the pillow.

Lighting: Overhead pendant was from Land of Nod and the lamp was from RH Baby and Child {on sale during their lighting sale event}.

Mobile: Also from RH Baby and Child {50% off}.

Artwork: Avalisa prints (orange giraffe and elephants) from Art.com {%20 off}. You can always find online discount codes if you look around.

Wall Decals: The Tree is from Art Wall Project and the safari stack is from Single Stone Studios.

Favorite Items.

Probably boring but my favorite items are the more practical things that make our lives easier. The orange and brown square baskets that I keep burp cloths, blankets, and toys in. They are easy to get in and keep everything looking neat and tidy. I also have these hanging in his closet from Land of Nod, which I use to fold pants and store shoes when he gets older.

Advice.
If nothing out there catches your eye, don’t stress! You don’t have to spend a fortune on a custom look for your little one.

Child’s Name: Tennyson

Child’s Age: Due on August 8th, 2010

Location: Springville, Utah

What was your inspiration for the room?

We wanted this nursery to look and feel as clean and fresh as possible. I hate clutter, and therefore wanted decorations to be sparse. I also wanted every piece of furniture included in the room to be functional.

Details about the room:

Paint: The color is Wading Duck by Color Palace, sold at Walmart. Lola wanted the blue to be bright and fun and to somewhat resemble a refreshing swimming pool.

Decorative Pillow: From Target for $4.99!

Silhouette Wall Art: DIY project. See details here.

Sunburst Mirror: DIY project! Can you believe it? Lola found a super simple tutorial here and made the mirror for under $11.

Curtains: From Ikea! These are actually shower curtains and Lola also used them to replace the closet door in her nursery. She does warn us of 2 things: they need to be hemmed and they are a real hassle to iron. But for under $20, I think it might be worth it.

Rocking Chair: Purchased at a yard sale for $2… 6 years ago! It took 2 cans of paint to coat this rocking chair. But Lola only spent $2 on paint at Walmart!

Throw Pillow on Rocker: Made from Ikea fabric. Lola raves about their fabric selections and prices.

Vinyl Lettering: Vinyl lettering has become very popular. Lola purchased her’s local craft store, Robert’s Crafts. You can also purchase vinyl decor from stores like Michael’s, Target, Kolh’s and even Diapers.com.

Belinda has been an interior designer for over 10 years and recently launched Nest Design Studio, an interior design practice specializing in nursery decor based in Australia. For her son’s nursery, Belinda put her design skills to work and out together an adorable owl themed nursery. What do you think?

Child’s Name: Hugh

Child’s Age: 12 months

Location: Victoria, Australia

What was your inspiration for the room?

We moved into our brand new house only 3 weeks before Hugh was born, luckily he was overdue! We hadn’t found out what sex Hugh was going to be so I had a couple of idea’s in mind before he was born and his room was going to be blue regardless of if we had a boy or a girl and a tree theme would have worked for both ideas.

Describe your decorating style.

Being an interior designer, I love so many different styles. However our house is quite contemporary and I used a lot of red & white throughout it, so I incorporated these colours into Hugh’s room and added a dirty blue & navy blue.

Give us all the details about your room! Don’t forget to share with us any money saving tips you might have learned along the way.

Paint: Dulux Sell Out

Tree: There are so many gorgeous tree decals available now, but none of them were quite what I wanted. I decided to paint the tree on using a few different tree decals as inspiration.

Owls: At the time, Owls were only just starting to come into trend, so there wasn’t alot around when I was finishing Hugh’s room, so the majority of the Owl features were made by me, including the Owls on his tree and 3 Owl prints (just using different decorative papers).

Furniture: All the big items in Hugh’s room are white. I’m not a fan of the timber look in a nursery and white is so gentle and soothing. My Nanny passed away whilst I was pregnant and I was lucky to inherit a beautiful old dresser. My Mum put in the hard work and sanded it all back & repainted it a glossy white. I love having a family item in his room.

Quilt: My Grandma made Hugh’s quilt. I use it reverse side up which is a gorgeous blue fabric, but on the other side my Grandma has embroidered beautiful flowers…. if we have a daughter, it will eventually be hers.

Favorite Items: I love the tree. I had a miscarriage before I had Hugh and we had nicknamed the baby Apple, so when I was painting the tree, I painted a little apple on it as a memorial to her. The tree is lovely and soft and the room get’s beautiful sunlight and is a soothing place to be.

Advice: Use what you love. Just because Winnie the pooh and Peter Rabbit are popular for a baby’s room doesn’t mean it’s right for you! You’ll get so many more comments on a room if they are individual and unique.
