What was your inspritation for the room?

Someone gave me a wonderful gift from Mamma Mio while I was pregnant and I loved the Robin’s Egg blue color of the packaging. I found a paint color to match for the walls and the rest came together from there! When I found out we were having a girl, I decided that yellow would be a fun accent color. I wanted the room to feel cheerful, happy and fun because that’s the life I want for my daughter.

Describe your decorating style.

My decorating style is colorful, whimsical, and airy. I like mixing old and new things with handmade touches. I always like a room to have an element of surprise that adds a unique touch.

Paint: Robin’s Nest (#618) from Benjamin Moore.

Bedding: “Macaroni” from Nursery Works. It has been discontinued but there are lots of other great choices where I bought it at www.modernnursery.com.

Shelving: Expedit bookcase from Ikea.

Dresser: Malm dresser from Ikea. To give the dresser more kick, I covered a few of the fronts with a natural shade of seagrass wallpaper. It adds texture and interest without making it stand out too much. It also makes the dresser look more upscale (in my opinion).

Banner: “Hooray” banner came from Etsy.

Dachshund lamp: Offi My Pet Lamp Dachsund by Offi Nursery Furniture.

Felt owl: Ollie the Dotted Owl by KLT Works.

Mobile: Petit Collage Bamboo Mobile – Bird Trio by Petit Collage.

Crib: Oeuf Crib Classic in Birch.

Chair: The yellow chair is a reupholstered $9 score from Salvation Army.

Art above the crib: The right image is a from a book cover (about children’s book illustration). The left image of the elephant is my own drawing/design. The

Curtains: Valances were from Walmart. There are blackout shades in the windows, hidden by the curtains. We added Martha Stewart decorative ribbon to the bottoms of the shades to add interest to the otherwise boring plain white surface. The ribbon comes with adhesive already applied, so it was an easy project. The shades are used every nap and every night!

Favorite items.

My favorite “item” in the room is my daughter! But I guess she isn’t really an item per se. My favorite objects in the room are the hooray banner (it really conveys the excitement Little P brings to our life), the yellow dachshund lamp (we have a mini dachshund as a pet who we love), and the fabric hoops.

Advice.

Start with a fun wall color and consider the design style you like. Spend some time researching furniture and accessories that compliment it. I had an idea folder on my computer where I saved images of things I liked. Once I isolated the trends of what I liked most the room came together easily. It’s important to take your time and flush out your ideas rather than rush. A small scale diagram also helped because I was able to make sure that all of the furniture pieces would fit how I wanted. I also made a little idea board with all my favorite things and colors (on the computer) to make sure it all worked together.

And while most of people are not good enough with a paint brush or can’t afford to splurge on having trees painted on their nursery walls, its always good to know that the vision for your nursery can still be executed with style in a cost-efficient way.

What was your inspiration for the room?

We moved into our brand new house only 3 weeks before Hugh was born, luckily he was overdue!  We hadn’t found out what sex Hugh was going to be so I had a couple of idea’s in mind before he was born and his room was going to be blue regardless of if we had a boy or a girl and a tree theme would have worked for both ideas.

Describe your decorating style.

Being an interior designer, I love so many different styles.  However our house is quite contemporary and I used a lot of red & white throughout it, so I incorporated these colours into Hugh’s room and added a dirty blue & navy blue.

Paint: Dulux Sell Out

Tree: There are so many gorgeous tree decals available now, but none of them were quite what I wanted.  I decided to paint the tree on using a few different tree decals as inspiration.

Owls: At the time, Owls were only just starting to come into trend, so there wasn’t alot around when I was finishing Hugh’s room, so the majority of the Owl features were made by me, including the Owls on his tree and 3 Owl prints (just using different decorative papers).

Furniture: All the big items in Hugh’s room are white.  I’m not  a fan of the timber look in a nursery and white is so gentle and soothing.  My Nanny passed away whilst I was pregnant and I was lucky to inherit a beautiful old dresser. My Mum put in the hard work and sanded it all back & repainted it a glossy white.  I love having a family item in his room.

Quilt: My Grandma made Hugh’s quilt. I use it reverse side up which is a gorgeous blue fabric, but on the other side my Grandma has embroidered beautiful flowers…. if we have a daughter, it will eventually be hers.

Favorite Items: I love the tree.  I had a miscarriage before I had Hugh and we had nicknamed the baby Apple, so when I was painting the tree, I painted a little apple on it as a memorial to her.  The tree is lovely and soft and the room get’s beautiful sunlight and is a soothing place to be.

Advice: Use what you love.  Just because Winnie the pooh and Peter Rabbit are popular for a baby’s room doesn’t mean it’s right for you!  You’ll get so many more comments on a room if they are individual and unique.

The San Francisco Decorator Showcase took place during the month of May in a 1930’s French Normandy-style mansion. Several design firms were given a room in the house to decorate. Chiya Ewald, of the interior design firm Marsh & Clark, was assigned the third floor attic to transform into a triplet nursery.

Chiya Ewald, designer, says “We wanted to go beyond the deluge of duckies and primary colors to create a beautiful and innovative room that that appeals to modern parents’ aesthetics and sensibilities.” And that they did with this sustainable and multi-functional, sophisticated baby room.

The cribs were handcrafted by Rob Taboada, a local craftsman. These cribs were made with sustainable and toxin-free materials like Machiche {sustainably-harvested hardwood}.

The carpets underneath the cribs are made of 100% un-dyed wool.

And those beautiful chandeliers? Custom-made and make perfect mobiles.

Changing tables double as mirrors to reflect light and space in the room. And the accent wall painted with square patterns breaks up the solid powder-blue of the other walls.
