Featured Nursery: Serene, Modern and Gray

Expectant mom Tracy and her husband are expecting their first child and wanted to create a serene, modern room that wasn’t too childish; one that could grow with their little one. The inspiration for this gray nursery came from the birch tree decals — and they chose a light bluish-gray paint for the walls to complement the white decals. The unique art work and heirloom toys and furniture add a layer of heritage to this new baby’s space.

Child’s Name: Grayson
Child’s Age: Due on St. Patrick’s Day
Location: Chapel Hill, NC

What was your inspiration for the room?
Birch tree decals.

Describe your decorating style.
Modern, clean with a touch of coziness and nostalgia.

Favorite items in the room.
My favorite part has to be the baby animal photos purchased on sale at theanimalprintshop.com; they are just adorable! I also love the Oeuf Sparrow crib and the Klaussner rocker & ottoman.

Tell us about your DIY projects and repurposed items.
The dresser is an old This End Up dresser that was in my childhood bedroom which we updated by painting it gray and replacing the knobs. The wooden toys also have some history to them — they were my brother’s toys growing up.

Any words of wisdom or advice you would like to share with our readers that you may have learned while putting together your nursery?
I was told by many mom friends to spend money on a nice rocker and crib so the majority of my budget went towards those items. I saved money by reusing old furniture (the dresser and side table) and furnishings (the drapes and lamps), as well as budget friendly solutions from IKEA, and Overstock.com. I think you also get the most bang for your buck on wall treatments like the decals since they provide such a large focal point. I also made sure to shop around and wait for sales on items that I coveted. For example, overstock.com often runs coupons on top of sale prices; BuyBuyBaby does as well. The animalprintshop ran a special when you bought four prints you got one free.  This room was a work in progress for quite a while waiting for the best prices.

New in 2012: Baby Gear

It’s hard to believe that 2012 is not even two weeks old — and there are already new baby products to buzz about! Scroll down to check out some of our favorite new products of 2012.

New Arrivals, Inc. has added more beautiful designs and patterns to their collection of crib bedding sets — featuring bold and trendy prints. We’re loving them all — especially the chevron crib bedding!

DwellStudio just came out with some super sweet swaddle blankets ($33 for 2). There are four different pattern and color combinations to choose from — and they’re the perfect gift for a new baby or mama-to-be!

If I were expecting a baby in 2012, the Stokke Bounce ‘n’ Sleep would be at the top of my wishlist! It’s a 2-in-1 bouncer ($200) and day bed ($250) combo — and the design (just like all of Stokke’s products) is fabulous. It’s not cheap but it’s definitely a splurge-worthy item!

The Look For Less: DwellStudio Owls Nursery

Designer nursery collections —like those offered by Serena & Lily and DwellStudio— are coveted by many mamas-to-be but the hefty price tag on some of these items can burst mama’s dream nursery bubble in a flash!

But you can still put together a nursery that looks right out of a catalog or magazine by cutting costs in the right places. Take for example, the ever-popular Owls collection from DwellStudio.

  • The first place I cut costs when it comes to nursery design is crib bedding. I’ve always thought it’s a complete waste of money. And thanks to new sleep guidelines, you’ll probably be more inclined to listen to me when I say, JUST GO WITH A CRIB SHEET! You can save $320 by choosing the Owls Crib Sheet ($40) instead of the Owls Sky Crib Bedding Set from DwellStudio ($360).
  • Wallpaper can be expensive. But you can buy the minimum 8 sq ft of the Owls Wallpaper (which comes out to about $48) and cut and frame the pieces to create designer wall art for a minimal cost — an 8 ft wide wall, that’s 10 ft high would cost almost $500 to wallpaper. Eek!
  • Get creative! Place a DwellStudio Tree Decal (starting at $50) and decorate it with some adorable Owl Picture Frames ($40 each). You can use velcro to securely fasten them to the wall.
  • Splurge on a few Owl Storage Bins ($50 for small bin, $90 for large bin).
  • Forget the Owl and Tree Wool Rug ($550) and opt for a long striped brown and cream rug ($150) also from DwellStudio.
