DIY: How to Make a Large Abacus {Do-It-Yourself}

Last year we featured a nursery with an over-sized abacus above the changing area. And I haven’t been able to get that abacus out of my mind since. It’s fantastic!

However…

Making your own abacus gives you the opportunity to customize the colors to match your decor and you can make one for at least half the price of the original CB2 version.

Jenny {and her husband Derek} over at Anything Pretty recently made an abacus for their  nursery and share a step-by-step tutorial for how you can make one.

And they included some pretty nifty features too!

Their abacus frame is thicker so it can be screwed directly into the wall for extra safety and they made adjustments so that the beads can be switched out {in case they ever want to change the color palette}.

Painted Rugs {Do-it-Yourself}

Rugs, rugs, rugs.

They can make a room, you know!

But have you shopped around for a rug lately?

Hello?! At least $199 for a 5′x7′ plain {no print/pattern} rug.

Check out these easy-peasy tutorials to turn an inexpensive rug into a one of a kind beauty with a stencil and some paint.

The chevron painted rug tutorial {top} comes from House of Smiths. An inexpensive IKEA flat woven rug gets a makeover just in time for Spring with paint and vinyl chevron stencils.

The Moroccan pattern rug {bottom} was a project by a grad student living in Spain from A Little Bit of Everything. Another inexpensive {and plain} Ikea rug transformed into a stunning focal point with a little creativity and some paint.

DIY: How to make Giant Paper Poppy Flowers

I’m a firm believer that EVERY room should have fresh flowers.

Due to allergies, it’s not suggested that fresh flowers be placed in a newborn’s nursery. But you can still brighten up the space with these giant paper poppy flowers.

Details and template to make these yourself are available at marthstewart.com.
