Child’s Age: 3 1/2 months old

Describe your decorating style: I would say we lean towards modern classic design. Our house is a palette of greys, whites and blacks, and this soft blue-grey room is a welcome addition.

What was your inspiration for the room? We had an idea of how we wanted it to look, but I must say the whole design really came together when we discovered ‘A Vintage Poster’ and ordered the print set above the crib. They became the focal point, and the rest just fell into place!

What are your thoughts on gray walls?

I first came across one of Elissa Hudson’s prints on Pinterest. The “I Believe in Pink” print was the one that made me go out and find her. And I was pleasantly surprised to discover that she had so many sweet prints available through her shop!

Elissa is an illustrator and her work has been featured on greeting cards and in magazines, and is on display in many children’s rooms. She LOVES “creating fun, fresh illustrations” and also has a passion for hand lettering and design.

Courtney, of Little Glass Box, and her husband saved some serious cash in this nursery by foregoing a crib bedding set. Instead, they purchased an inexpensive crib sheet on Amazon and made a no sew crib skirt. Love the back wall behind the crib? It’s not wallpaper. It was done with a homemade stencil. Can you believe it?

My favorite design choice for the room was also the boldest: the dark walls. The paint color is Martha Stewart’s Silhouette and it adds incredible ‘drama’ to the room. Recognize the modern rocking chair? You may have seen it in a recent nursery design board.

Antique shop finds, like the vintage school chair, and some creative wall art alternatives {they framed several store-bought cards in inexpensive IKEA frames} add the personal touches that make this room even more special.

Other big money savers were the fabulous Craig’s List furniture finds. Both the crib and dresser were purchased on Craig’s List for under $100 each, sanded, primed, painted and brought back to life with lots of love for a little baby that was on the way.

Child’s Age: 1 year old

Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL

What was your inspiration for the room?

I wanted to name our daughter Finley Laverne. Laverne was my grandmother’s name. She was an amazing woman who was diagnosed with polio at the age of 26. She was paralyzed from the waste down due to her condition. She always said that when she died, she wanted to return from heaven as a bird. I dreamt of a vintage owl nursery one night  and knew that it would be perfect for her namesake great grand daughter. With the owl idea, I began visualizing a retro feel for Finley’s nursery that would display the owls in a subtle way and it all came together quickly.

Tell us about your style.

My husband and I are both designers (he is a software architect by day and painter/designer by night). We are total modernites and created our daughter’s nursery to reflect our LOVE for cheap chic mid-century design and furniture. We have tons of mid-century modern renovating experience and wanted our dear Finley’s room to reflect that.

Wall Color: Ralph Lauren Faded Seafoam {it’s calming and soothing}

Bedding: Breeze Baby by Sweet Potato

1st Changing Table {small}: Vintage Haywood Wakefield (the very first piece of furniture that my husband and I restored together)

2nd Changing Table/Dresser: A danish modern hospital sideboard. It was originally turquoise! I stripped the paint off and it revealed beautiful solid birch construction. It is perfect for a 1 yr old because the handles are hidden and there is lots of storage.

Crib: Pali Italy from Baby Love in South Florida. {locally owned}

Mural: The mural behind her crib is an original piece painted by my husband. I helped to draw some of the owls. We created it for her when I was in my final weeks.
