Eli’s Orange and Navy Nursery {Real Nursery Spotlight}

A space that both parents and baby can enjoy. That’s what Katie knew she wanted from the very beginning. Staying away from themes and pastels, this interior designer created this orange and navy nursery inspired by some vintage finds.

Child’s Name: Eli
Child’s Age: 1 month
Location: Minnesota

What was your inspiration for the room?
I knew that I wanted a nursery that didn’t have a typical baby theme with pastel colors. I wanted it to be something that my husband and I could enjoy and our boy could grow into. I started by finding vintage globes and knew I wanted to incorporate a map somehow.  Sort of an adventure/travel theme without being too literal.

Describe your decorating style.
As an interior designer, I am inspired by so many different styles and I truly love them all.  I like to mix high with low, add contrast and texture and interesting accessories.  I always try to get the most bang for my buck, DIY as much as I can and look for deals to create an amazing look on a budget!

Favorite Items.
The map decal from Etsy and the large stuffed giraffe are my favorite items in the room.

Any tips or lessons learned to share with us?
Don’t feel stuck using the ‘bed-in-a-bag’ crib bedding sets at baby stores.  Pick a favorite color combo, piece of art or fabric and design the nursery around that.  You want to be able to enjoy the nursery as much as your little one will someday so use things that you like.  After all, you’ll spend a lot of time in there!

I enjoy making things and crafting so I created a lot of DIY art to save money. I painted the alphabet letters with my girlfriends at my baby shower for a personal touch that was a lot of fun. I painted three canvases with silhouettes of a truck, airplane and motorcycle. I also covered a bulletin board in orange burlap with silver nail head trim so we can add new personal mementos and art over the years. The rocking chair was found at a garage sale and we reupholstered and painted it. I saw it online for $500 and we paid $5!
