nursery color inspiration: earth thones

eart-tones

When it comes to decorating a nursery, earth tones are my favorite. They’re soothing and relaxing, which is exactly what baby and a tired mommy and daddy need.

Nursery Inspirations: Macaron Delight

Hello lovelies. It’s me Ana and it’s been a while since I put my creative juices to good work…but alas I am back.

It seems like macarons (or macaroons, if you like) are everywhere I look these days. Wonderful, beautiful, colorful little sweet delights that make each bite cheerful and lovely. So why not use these little beauties as inspiration for the home as well… especially for children’s rooms. Use pops of color, a little… or a lot. You can’t go wrong with whichever you choose!

A Room For Three: A Nursery Design Board For Momma’s Gone City

Jessica of Momma’s Gone City is one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met — so as soon as I found out she was expecting baby #3 I knew I had to whip up something special for her. Jessica lives with her husband, and her two toddlers (a girl and a boy) and now a brand new baby boy in a small apartment in New York City — and all three kiddos will be sharing a bedroom, so it’s safe to say that things are pretty cramped.

Kids have a lot of stuff. So the goal of this design is to keep things simple — and uncluttered!

I hope she likes it! Do you?

Before design this room, I spoke with Jessica and she told me that she had already purchased the Oeuf Perch Bunk Bed ($1,500) and the Oeuf Classic Crib ($940) — great choices! And her modern choice of furniture sent me on my way…

As a New York City dweller, I know all too well that small apartments in NY are much smaller than anywhere else — so I wanted to keep the space as simple as possible. Too many things on the walls of a small room can make it feel like it’s closing in on you. I selected three Vintage Modern Inspired 12″ Wooden Letters ($18 each) to place near the bed of each child — to personalize their space.

They’ll need some storage, as well as a changing area for baby — so I selected the inexpensive Ikea Expedit ($40). It’s cheap, modern and it’ll get the job done. A changing pad can be placed — and secured! — on the top, while bins containing diapering essentials and clothing changes (top two openings) and toys for the bigger kids (one for each) can be place on the bottom.

Chevron Zig Zag Curtains ($40 per panel) and a super retro-modern Artecnica Themis Mobile ($30) bring in some fun — with bold graphic patterns and lots of color. While a Baxton Studio Cradle Chair ($132) adds a modern place to sit, feed and bond. Add a soft rug, Ikea Flokati ($80), for everyone to enjoy some tummy time together!

Fun at the Circus: A Carnival-Inspired Nursery

Step right up, ladies and gentlemen! For many people, the circus = clowns. Well, not for me! The truth is, I don’t like clowns at all because they kinda freak me out. But I do love a good-old-fashioned carnival circus! Something like Coney Island in the 1950’s — with a Ferris wheel, lots of color and dogs performing circus tricks. Check out this whimsical nursery board inspired by the whimsical and magical feeling of having fun at the circus!

1. Fabric Pennant Banner in Red & White – Carnival ($28) by mkmathews from Etsy
Red and white stripes scream “Carnival Circus” if you ask me! And this fabric banner was the first thing I looked for when I came up with the idea of a circus-themed nursery.

2. Wooden Lighted Hanging Chandelier ($70) by Twelve Timbers from Toys R’ Us
An ornate wooden chandelier hanging from the ceiling adds drama to the this space — the good kind, not mama drama!

3. Hot Air Balloons and Clouds – 3D Paper Wall Art ($30) by Gosh and Golly from Etsy
I’m completely obsessed with hot air balloons. Seriously, I am. These 3D hot air balloons add a whimsical touch to the entire theme. And they’re just sooo pretty!

4. Jenny Lind-Style Crib ($170) from DaVinci

5. Circus Dog Pillow, 20 x 20, Applique ($88) and Large Circus Elephant Pillow, Applique ($88) by Anna Joyce from Etsy
I splurged a little on these pillows but I think they are the perfect accent pieces for this room!

6. Rainbow Rag Rug ($69) from Urban Outfitters

7. Marquee Alphabet Light – Multi ($179) from Urban Outfitters
This funky alphabet light reminds me of the signs at the circus or carnival. It’s a fun and unique way to personalize baby’s room.

8. Ferris Wheel – Vinyl Wall Art Decal ($95) by Vinyl Wall Accents from Etsy
Wouldn’t it be neat to have an enormous ferris wheel decal as a focal point in the nursery? I would probably order this in red and paint the walls in a pale blue — something like the background color of #3.

9. Tiffany Blue Antique Dresser (Sold) by French Silver from Etsy
Even though this dresser has already been sold, I included it because I love the shape! Take it as a point of reference and try to find a dresser with similar french curves at your local antique and thrift shops.

Decorating Ideas: Modern Toddler Bedroom

Babies grow into toddlers pretty quickly and their needs change even quicker.

I’ve been planning the redesign of my daughter Sophia’s nursery into a toddler bedroom and I thought I’d share some of my ideas with you.

The redesign will take Sophia’s room from frufru girly pink to modern big girl bedroom.

Inspiration Board details:

1. Paint: Coconut Cream 3004-2C from Valspar.

* The actual color looks completely different than this screen image. It’s muted and relaxing.

2. Bedding: Brooke Quilted Bedding from Pottery Barn.

3. Ceiling lamp: BÖJA Pendant lamp from Ikea.

4. Chalkboard decals: Chalkboard Mini from Layla Grace.

5. Shelves: Expedit Shelving Unit from Ikea.

*I’m going to turn it on it’s side and add some legs.

6. Coat rack: Clothes Tree from Giggle.

7. Rocking horse: Tori Rocking Horse from Giggle.

8. Bed: Classic Toddler Bed by Oeuf.

9. Dresser: Malm 6-drawer dresser from Ikea.
