Alice is a mom who loves art, fashion, party planning and interior design. This South Floridian was deeply influenced by her tropical surroundings and love of the beach. The end result? A bright, budget-friendly wonderland for a sweet baby girl!

Child’s Name:Haven’t decided yet.

Child’s Age: Due March 5th, 2010

Location: South Florida

What was your inspiration for the room?

I wanted a nursery that was unique, functional and fun! I loved the color aqua for the walls and wanted to use it for a boy or a girl. When I found out she was a girl, I picked yellow and bright pink as my accent colors and just went from there.

Describe your decorating style.
I live by the beach, so there is definitely a tropical element to my decorating style but with a modern twist. I was also working on a budget so I had to get creative with some of my choices.

Give us all the details about your room! Don’t forget to share with us any money saving tips you might have learned along the way.

Furniture: I wanted to keep the furniture neutral and modern. I was so happy to find the Baby Mod – Olivia 3-in-1 Crib, Amber and White from Wal-Mart. It looks like an expensive Oeuf crib but for 1/3 of the cost. It‘s made of solid wood and will convert into a toddler and day bed so it was a great value for the price. The dresser is the Malm 6-drawer dresser from Ikea that also doubles as a changing table and the bookshelf is the Ikea Expedit.

Glider: Function definitely won over fashion here. While I dreamed about an Eames Molded Plastic rocker
or an upholstered Monte glider, I found the Dutailier gliders to be the most comfortable for my height (5’8”) and also quiet and well made. Bonus: I found mine on Craigslist in like new condition for only $60!

Toy Chest/ Window Seat: This is an outdoor storage bench from Pier One. I covered the original cushion with a fabric shower curtain that I found at TJ Maxx. I used the remaining fabric to make the lamp shade and a stuffed owl.

Paint: Benjamin Moore No VOC paint in “Ocean Spray.”

Crib Set: “Sea Holly Rose” by Nurseryworks*. (If you want to see this bedding in another nursery, go see Rich Chocolate & Pink Nursery) I love the large, graphic print and the hot pink color and it’s made from organic cotton. I didn’t think a crib skirt worked with my modern style crib so I used the bumper that was included with the crib set at the bottom of the crib to fill that space.

Sheep Mobile: This project was inspired by Flensted’s Black Sheep Mobile from the Museum of Modern Art. I kept the black and white contrast but added a pop of color. I love how it “dances” over the crib when the fan is on.

Embroidery Hoop Art: This was a DIY project. All you need is an embroidery hoop and different patterns, shapes and textures made from scrapbook paper and felt.

Wall Art: The Banana Poster is an Andy Warhol print that I bought off of EBay and framed. I also used two of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes as pictures.

Surfboard: I think my yellow WRV mini longboard looks really cool against the aqua walls. She’ll be a Pisces like her mama and will hopefully love the beach and the ocean.

Favorite Items.

There are lots of DIY projects in this room that I worked on throughout my pregnancy. I think these homemade touches make the room truly unique.

Advice.

It’s never too early to start planning your dream nursery!

Megan and her husband wanted to create a classic nursery with a little bit of a coastal feel for their baby girl Wynn. In order to achieve their goal, they broke away from the traditional pink nursery and succeeded in designing a room where both parents and baby can relax.

Child’s Name: Wynn

Child’s Age: 4 weeks

Location: Westminster, MD

Describe your decorating style.

Traditional

Give us all the details about your room! Don’t forget to share with us any money saving tips you might have learned along the way.

Flooring: We installed Brazillian Koa hardwood flooring ourselves. That saved us well over $1000.00. We rented the nail gun for the installation late Saturday afternoon and we were able to keep it until Monday morning because they were closed on Sunday.

Walls: The paint color is Valspar’s Woodlawn Silver Brook. My husband installed wainscoting on the lower half of the wall. It was inexpensive since he made all the pieces himself. It was a time consuming project, and my husband had no prior experience. But with a router and table saw, it went smoothly.

Crib: Cocoon Nursery Furniture 7000 Series Convertible Crib purchased from www.csnstores.com which offered free shipping, and that was a big discount compared to other stores and websites.

Bookcase: Matching bookcase purchased on sale from Target.

Curtains & Lighting: Faux silk curtains from www.target.com and lighting from www.walmart.com.

Rug: Hand-tufted Zebra Brown Wool Rug from Overstock.com.

Glider: From Babies R Us website. t was less than $400, and it was free shipping and handling. It has great reviews on their site. It’s super soft and comfy. I love it.

Wall Decal and Mobile: The decal was about $25.00 from a seller on Etsy.com. I also purchased the decorative mobile from a seller on Etsy.com.

Wall Decor: DIY project. I bought a pad of coordinating scrapbook paper and some inexpensive frames at Michael’s. All I did was cut the paper to fit the frame, and we get a lot of compliments on it. It in total cost $50 for five framed pieces of “art”.

Favorite Items.

The decal and mobile from Etsy. I love that site!

Advice.

Check out the internet for DIY instructions before you hire someone to do the work. We had never installed hardwood or done wainscotting and it wasn’t as bad as we thought. We are very proud to have done it ourselves. If you are thinking about purchasing furniture from Target.com, they often offer free shipping and 15% a purchase of $125.00 or more. Be on the look out for sales and coupons.

Thank you Megan, for taking the time to share your room and your budget-friendly tips with us. We hope that Wynn is enjoying her nursery!

These expectant parents did an amazing job putting together a feminine and sophisticated nursery for their twin girls to grow in. From the diy projects done with love by mom to all of the budget friendly finds that make this room unique, we've got all the details.

Description

Twin Girls Delicate Nursery

Children’s Name

Meital and Orly

Children’s Age

3 weeks

Location

Irvine, CA

What was your inspiration for the room?

Rather than select a major theme around which to decorate the room, my husband and I focused on creating an environment or a feeling. That is, we wanted a serene, delicate, feminine space for our twin girls that wasn’t overly pink or stereotypically girly. It was also important to us that the room be able to grow with the girls so I aimed to create a more sophisticated space. Light blue and baby pink have always been favorite colors, and I love animals so, with the above attributes in mind, I decided to create a blue room with pale pink touches and animal accents.

Describe your decorating style

I love clean, contemporary, unique designs that aren’t too matchy-matchy. Also, I’m a big fan of rooms that have unique, personal pieces and homemade touches.

Details about the room

Paint: Behr Sonata.

Cribs: Baby Mod Cadence 4-in-1 Crib from Wal-Mart (these look great, were extremely affordable, and can grow with the girls).

Glider and Ottoman: Crypton glider from Costco (this was a big splurge, but I’ve read great reviews about the strength of Crypton fabric against stains and liked that the glider wasn’t too “baby-ish” and would be able to work in other rooms if we decided to move it in the future).

Dresser, Night Stand, Storage Bench: Ikea Hemnes series.

Bookshelf: Ikea Expedit shelving unit.

Curtains: Ikea Alvine Rund and Merete curtains.

Names above cribs: from Etsy seller SheaChicDesigns.

Owl mobile: owls from Etsy seller aprilfoss, the rest was a DIY project.

Cherry tub serving as a diaper caddy: from Etsy seller brodyandma.

Pink hippo and elephant wall art above bookshelf: DIY project.

Check out one of the many decorating blogs and websites available (like this one!) to get an idea of what you like prior to actually starting the design process. I pored over hundreds of “real” nursery room photos before selecting a theme or style for the room, and I definitely think it paid off in terms of helping me create a cohesive space that I’m ultimate very much in love with.

Description

Sivan and her husband did an amazing job putting together a feminine and sophisticated nursery for their twin girls, Meital and Orly, to grow in. From the diy projects done with love by mom to all of the budget friendly finds that make this room unique, Sivan shares with us all the details.

Age: 3 weeks

Location: Irvine, CA
