Kids Craft Room: 2010 Atlanta Symphony Show House & Gardens

If you have space in your home for a playroom/kids craft area, I suggest you take some notes from this showroom.

One of my favorite details in the room is also a budget-friendly project that any of you can try in your home.

There were 3 doors hiding massive storage that were covered in metal sheets and converted into magnetic boards. The doors were totally wrapped on the front & sides was finished on the back for safety reasons. The corners were smooth so there would be no issues to be had with little one’s running around this door. Nail head toppers were also added to cover the screws to make it look like a built-in and not an “add-on”. The magnetic board can be seen in the top left of the photograph below.

Margaret L. Norcott, Principal of Millieu Design Group, is the mastermind behind this room showcased at the 2010 Atlanta Symphony Show House & Gardens. Margaret says that the main inspiration for the room was the Middle Window Floral Fabric {by Duralee}. “All the paint, fabrics and accessories to Floor tiles were a result of this wonderful, gender-neutral (not to childish) fabric.”

Finnish Interior Designer Susanna Vento  describes her style as “modern, purified and Scandinavian style, carried out without too much of seriousness.” We love how she’s taken classic interior design ideas and combined them with modern elements… Simply stylish!

Designer Spotlight: Virgina Johnson

Have you heard of Virgina Johnson?

She’s a Canadian textile designer who creates stunning prints on home accessories like rugs and throw pillows. And she also designs crib bedding!

I was browsing through her online shop and just couldn’t get enough of her new line. The print colors are vibrant yet muted {trendy} and you won’t find anything like this in big box department stores.

The prints on the fabric are block-printed instead of screen-printed which means that every item is unique due to the irregularities of this hand-printing method.

Virginia Johnson’s crib bedding can only be defined as a handmade beauty that takes what we love most about traditional crib bedding, simplicity, and gives it a trendy and sophisticated twist.

* Thank you to Holly from decor8 for introducing me to Virgina Johnson’s designs.

Modern Eco-Friendly Nursery for Triplets

The San Francisco Decorator Showcase took place during the month of May in a 1930’s French Normandy-style mansion. Several design firms were given a room in the house to decorate. Chiya Ewald, of the interior design firm Marsh & Clark, was assigned the third floor attic to transform into a triplet nursery.

Chiya Ewald, designer, says “We wanted to go beyond the deluge of duckies and primary colors to create a beautiful and innovative room that that appeals to modern parents’ aesthetics and sensibilities.” And that they did with this sustainable and multifunctional, sophisticated baby room.

The cribs were handcrafted by Rob Taboada, a local craftsman. These cribs were made with sustainable and toxin-free materials like Machiche {sustainably-harvested hardwood}.

The carpets underneath the cribs are made of 100% un-dyed wool.

And those beautiful chandeliers? Custom-made and make perfect mobiles.

Changing tables double as mirrors to reflect light and space in the room. And the accent wall painted with square patterns breaks up the solid powder-blue of the other walls.
