Two-Infant Bunkie: Cool or Kooky?

Parents of multiples often complain about the lack of space in their babies’ nursery — and who can blame them? No matter how big your room is, after placing two cribs inside, there isn’t space for much else. You could opt for one crib for two babies to share (like this twin nursery) or you could look into this piece that’s attempting to cater to the spatial challenges of parents of multiples (spotted on Apartment Therapy).

two infant bunk crib

It’s a Two-Infant Bunkie ($919, including two Simmons mattresses), designed to accommodate two infants up to 18 months old.

Sure, it’s a space saver but is it safe?

  1. I have to applaud the ingenuity but other than that I think I would have to pass on that one. I’m sure they have gone to great measures to make it safe (we hope) but it still just does not seem wise to me. But that is just MY opinion.

  2. That looks WAY too much like a cage. And how long would it take to get them out in case of fire. I’m thinking this is NUTS!

  3. The price is a bit spicy too.
My dad just made a bunk crib for my boys, but the one sleeping in the top bed is already 3, so he doesn’t need a cage. He loves is!

  4. Whoa. What happens when they get to the climbing stage?

  5. We used these at the daycare I used to work at (in the birth-walking room.) They work really well and are really safe when used properly. :-)

  6. I would be afraid of them falling. A two year old where I’m from died after falling from a bunk bed.

  7. Growing up our nursery at church had a whole wall of these. They were actually really safe, and believe it or not, I remember sleeping in them and thinking they were the coolest things ever. When the kids in the nursery got too old for these, we all wished we were small enough to sleep in them.

  8. I am a mother of 15 month old twins and I have had this crib from the moment that we brought them home. This crib is GREAT!!! I can not stress that enough. I don’t know what I would have done without it. Not only does it save space, but it is very safe and it still allows the twins to be close to one another without fear of either being smothered by the other. Yes, it does look almost like a jail, however it is because of this that it is safe, and the roll-top design glides very easily on the runners for fast and easy access. As far as the price goes, it is well worth it, by the time you consider two brand new cribs, you would be looking at about the same cost anyways. I would recommend this crib to anybody that is pregnant with twins.

    • @Mom of Twins, Thanks for your feedback! We’ve been hearing for other moms that also have this double crib and they have expressed similar feelings. We’re glad to hear that moms are multiples love it =)

  9. These beds are totally safe, but children still require supervision. The Consumer Product Safety Commission increased the safety of these and all cribs with strict new standards that go into effect this December on the 28th, of 2012. The rails are no longer able to swing open, as in the past. Also, the cribs do come with hardware to secure them to the wall. We think they are cute & compact, great for any space.

  10. My church used to have sets of these in their nursery and they always seemed to work well and were definitely a good space-saver. I’m looking for a way to fit my 5-month-old twin girls into our room now that they are getting too big (and mobile!) to share a crib. We have a very small apartment with very small rooms! As crazy and cage-like as this looks, I’m seriously considering it as an alternative to cramming two cribs into a tiny room that barely fits one crib and a full bed.

  11. I would love this for my twins’ small room but here’s problem número uno: where do you get sheets that size?!

  12. I think the idea behind this crib is pretty darn cool but i’m a traditionalist. The fear of the crib collapsing and rushing the baby is a bit too much for me.
