DIY: How to Make a Crayon Monogram

diy crayon monogram

How adorable is this crayon monogram? Perfect to gift to a special teacher but also a really fun idea for a nursery, child’s room or play room.

It’s a very simple DIY project.

Print your letter out on a scrap piece of paper.
Arrange crayons over letter.
Cut crayons individually to length using a sharp knife and cutting board.*
Glue crayon pieces together using a glue gun.
Then glue the crayon letter to a nice piece of stiff paper.
Frame.

*diy tip: When you’re making the straight cuts it helps to roll the crayon under your knife to score it all the way around, then it just snaps in the center leaving a cleaner cut. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with the slanted cuts.

Is this project something you’ll be trying? Leave a comment and let me know =)

  1. Oh me oh my do I LOVE this. This could be perfect for my nursery.

  2. how do you get the written type on bottom right?

  3. I have all my supplies and am making this at craft day tomorrow! Worried about tricky letters–I have an S and an R and my sister is making a G !! :/ Love idea!! Thanks

    • @Ashley, How did it go? Did you make them?

      • @Nicole Abbott, It actually went pretty well! We ended up just doing S and R that day—the S ended up a little crooked! The hard part was after the crayons were cut and layed on the pattern….to move them over to the cardstock without making it all over the place! But overall—VERY cute! and skill-wise—Easy! just precise :) Thanks for idea!

        • @Ashley, How did you make the S? I am in the process of it right now and CANNOT figure it out for the life of me!! And I can’t even find a S on the internet that I could follow from… I need some help! Any suggestions?

        • @Ashley, we just printed a big S off of computer—and used that as our template to lay/measure crayons on, once it was all cut and sitting perfectly on that template-we picked them up a row at a time and moved it onto cardstock paper. It went quite well but like I said, got crooked—so because the letter is so curvy-It would have been better when you start gluing so start in the center of the “s” and work out towards each end-then it would have held the correct curve easier. Good Luck!

  4. I love this….. I am going to make one for my GRAND-Daughters Birthday.

  5. That is pretty cool. Super cute. I brought crayons the other day for .10 cents a box and am totally going to make this!

  6. What font is this?

  7. This is so great. My friend just became a kindergarden teacher. Prfect gift to her

  8. Where can I find a great template for the letter “J”??

  9. LOVE THIS totally going to do this for my toddler son he will LOVE it!

  10. I love this & will make it with my daughter for her teacher for Christmas! What is the best way to make the angled cuts on the crayons?

  12. This is simply amazing! What an ingenious idea! I’m going to share this on my FB page and I just “thumbs-up’d it” on SU! Great job

  13. This is so adorable!!!! I can’t wait to make this for my granddaughter! One question, What is the size of your P? I would like to make it about 8X10 ish but I think that is going to not work. Thank you for sharing!

  14. I will most definately be making these for my kids teachers for Christmas this year. I have a kindergartner and a preschooler. Fantastic idea!

  15. I am making the letter K today for a teacher’s bday gift! Hope it turns out as cute as yours did! Thanks for the great (and thrifty!) idea!

  16. Planning on doing this for teacher Christmas gift this year, I’m curious what size frame did you use? 8×10? Wondering if 5×7 would be to small…

  17. I just made these for my son’s bedroom. It was a lot of fun and the instructions were easy. I used elmer’s glue and it worked quite well and there wasn’t a risk of melting crayons that a hot glue gun might have. I printed my letters using standard size printer paper, then mounted it on 12×12 card stock. It turned out great!

  18. Really nice! I will try this at home tonight!

  19. I made a letter “L” for my boyfriend’s mom. She’s an art teacher and she just started teaching at a brand new school where she teaches elementary children…which she hasn’t done for almost 20 years!! She loved it and it was a HUGE hit with the kids. It’s the perfect gift to bridge the gap between adulthood and childhood ;)

  20. Really nice and interesting Spacially for kids… Thanks for sharing.

  21. I found this wonderful idea on Pintrest and just bought all the supplies today! I’m going to make it for my best friend’s little sister as a Christmas present cause she love drawing and bright colors! Like @Ashley I have to make an “S” and I’m a bit apprehensive about how it will turn out. :/ Thank you SO much for sharing this idea with everyone! :D

  22. I have knited a crayon blanket for my grandson this project will go great with the blanket. I can’t wait to do it.

  24. Such a cute and clever idea, think I’m going to try this for my daughter’s preschool teacher for Christmas!

  25. Would you be willing to make this and sell them?

  26. Anyone have pics of other letters they have done? I’d love to see what others look like!

  27. what kind of paper did you glue it to when you were totally finished?

  28. I just made a “B” last night for my friend that is a teacher. So cute! My only complaint is that I couldn’t put the glass back into the frame because it would not fit with the crayons! But maybe that is just as well with a bunch of kids running around her classroom. Neat, personalized gift!

  29. This is so cool!!!! I am thinking about making one for each of my childcare children for Christmas. It would look so cute in their bedrooms.

I know a very deserving teacher and a wonderful caregiver that will be getting these this year! SO incredibly clever! I love it and thank you so much for sharing!!

  31. Can anyone tell me the type of frame that’s needed? I would like to make the monogram for my daughters teacher, I have searched everywhere. I can not find where to find the frame deep enough to not smash the against the crayons. Thanks for ANY help.

  32. ARE THESE JUMBO CRAYONS?

  33. @Tracey we just printed a big S off of computer—and used that as our template to lay/measure crayons on, once it was all cut and sitting perfectly on that template-we picked them up a row at a time and moved it onto cardstock paper. It went quite well but like I said, got crooked—so because the letter is so curvy-It would have been better when you start gluing so start in the center of the “s” and work out towards each end-then it would have held the correct curve easier. Good Luck!

  34. Does anyone have any tips on making an O?

  35. Im about to go upstairs and do this!!

  36. I was trying to make a L and it just was not working. By any chance do you have a picture of an L?

  37. Anyone made an “A”? I am having a hard time!

  38. What type of glue did everyone use?

  39. I’m making this tonight for my best friend’s birthday! She’s a 4th grade teacher and I think it’ll be perfect for her classroom

  40. Can’t wait to try this for my sons Kindergarten teacher! Such a cute idea.

  41. I need to make a P as well, but can’t figure out what font to use to make it as cute as yours.
    Thanks!

  42. I have a cricet and made the letter on that and then glued it to the paper. Is it better to use a shadow box or reg with out glass

  43. MamaSince2010 says

I would do this project if I had that many crayons! :( I want to spell out my sons name!!! :) great idea tho!

  44. Kacy Morgan says

I actually did this for my sons first grade teacher!! I hope she likes it!! :)

  45. Hey, I love this idea. I made one for my daughters teacher and blogged about it. I linked it back to your website. Thank you for the great idea!

  46. What type of paper exactly is best? And also, could you glue the crayons to the paper instead of gluing the crayons together and then putting them on paper?

  47. I really want to make this but is there a place to print out the larger letter templates? Also, where do I find the larger crayons?

    • @Sarah, There’s no template. You can go to your word processor, pick out a font that you like, and print it out in the size you want. And these are regular size crayons, not the bigger ones.
