Neutral, Nautral, and Striped: Featured Nursery

Looks like last week’s trend spotting post about tree branches in the nursery really caused a splash! And I was thrilled to receive an email from Kelle, the mama behind one of the featured nurseries in the post. Kelle sent over more images of her nursery and a few words about her design ideas and inspiration, and we’re happy to be able to share them with you today.

Description: A Coastal Nest
Child’s Name: Xavier
Child’s Age: 5 months
Location: Gold Coast, Australia

What was your inspiration for the room?
I wanted a space that felt fresh, clean and modern with blue and yellow accents. I spent months collecting the perfect pieces to add to the room – I didn’t want anything in there that I didn’t truly love.

Describe your decorating style.
Our home is a modern coastal style, with Asian influences.

Favorite items in the room?
I fell in love with the “I Love You More” print — I think it sums up the feelings of any parent about their child! I carried the butterfly theme from the mobile hanging above the crib to the wall around the print using decals, which show up so well against the striped wall. My other favorite is the driftwood hanging wardrobe I made – it’s such a simple but effective DIY idea to display your favorite baby clothes.

Any design advice for mamas designing their nursery?
(1) Think outside the box! Don’t just search baby stores for items to create your nursery – etsy.com and homewares/interior stores are full of great ideas to furnish your room.
(2) The internet is your best friend for shopping and idea sourcing — particularly as your pregnancy progresses and it’s harder to get around!
(3) If you need help – ask for it! I had so much fun decorating the space for Xavier. My interior design company Habitat & Beyond now offers eDesign and Nursery moodboards so I can continue creating beautiful spaces for parents and their little treasures!

  1. love this room, and I love Kelle, she’s so sweet

  2. Love it! I have a xavier too! Would love to know how you did the stripes on the wall though? Thanks!

  3. Hi Evelyn
Thanks! The walls were painted with Dulux China White and then once the paint was completely dry masking tape was used to mask off vertical lines and in-between the lines was then painted with Wattyl Chocolate Shake.
    Hope this helps!
    Kelle

  4. Kelle,

Beautiful room!!!! How did you hang the driftwood hanging wardrobe under the white shelf?!?

    Thanks!

  5. Darling room! Can you tell me how wide the wall stripes are? THanks!!!!

  6. Phoebe, we attached 2 bolts underneath the shelves and then suspended the driftwood with strong fishing wire!

Natalie, the white stripes are 30cm and the grey are 25cm.

    Thanks!

    Kelle

  7. Hi I absolutely love everything about this room. I am doing a nursery now and want to imitate this as much as I can. Do you know what Benjamin Moore paint colors would be the same/similar to this. And would this room work if my crib is a cherrywood?
You have such beautiful taste! wow!

    • Tzip I’m not familiar with the Benjamin Moore colours, they’re not common in Australia. I’m sure that a cherrywood crib would work well. I would just add some more wooden elements, such as wooden frames instead of the white or perhaps if you were doing the branch hanging wardrobe you could tint it the same colour.

  8. Hi Kelle,
Are there any more pictures you could share that show the rest of the layout of the room? You have inspired me so much, I can’t wait to start on my nursery!

    • Aimee – sure, check out my blog habitatandbeyond.blogspot.com for more images! Otherwise if you email me from the site I can send you one of the whole room – it’s not a big room!

  9. Sorry I have only just seen these questions!
